Movie Review: Ocean's Twelve

Bottom line: If you liked Ocean's Eleven, you'll like Ocean's Twelve.

I liked the 2001 version of Ocean's Eleven for many reasons; Steven Soderbergh's directing style, great writing, interesting characters, good dialog, and unexpected plot twists.  It was a fun movie, much like the original.  Ocean's Twelve will give you exactly that, but not a lot more.  I don't mean to make that sound bad, but I don't know how else to say it.  I enjoyed it, but it was just more of the same, but not much more.

Soderbergh again did a great job directing. the characters were as cool as before, with good dialog, and the plot twists were there as well.  The problem was that I'm guessing that anyone seeing the first film, will experience what I experienced in seeing the latest followup, they'll anticipate much of what happens before it happens.  The first film had spontaneity, and so does this one, unfortunately it's the same sort of spontaneity.  The first film surprised me with the ending. but because it was so similar to the first, I caught the twists in this one much earlier.  I don't want to make it sound like I didn't enjoy the movie, because I did.  Sure they changed a few things -- especially Catherine Zeta-Jones -- But I expected more from it.

I went to the last showing on a Wednesday night.  There were only two other people in the theater.  It's run is obviously fading now after a month and a half in release.
