It's been a long time since I've had a chance to catch a movie in the theater. Last weekend I finally got a chance to catch a few I've wanted to see. Hopefully it won't be so long between until the next time.
I really liked the original Meet the Parents. It was extremely funny, and cleverly written with great characters. Meet the Fockers looked equally promising, considering both the premise and excellent additions to the cast. I guess lots of people felt the same way, because the theater was very full even though the movie's been out for several weeks.
With the original director and writing team returning for the sequel, I had developed very high hopes. Although it turned out to be both enjoyable and funny, it had far fewer moments of true hilarity than the original. It also helps to have seen the first film as a handful of jokes make that assumption. In reflection, I think to me its biggest drawback was due to the great cast. By adding both Dustin Hoffman and Barbara Streisand to a movie that already had Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, I think they tried to pack in too may disparate scenes simply to feature each of those characters.
Despite my own personal let down with the film, it was funny and I still recommend seeing it. I'm also willing to believe that my opinion may actually be in the minority... the audience was very animated throughout the film, with a few even breaking into applause at the end.
Maybe I just expected a little too much.
