Movie Review: In Good Company

I was surprised at the turnout for this movie.  The theater was more than half full the night I went.

I loved the premise for In Good Company... One day you're a successful middle-aged sales executive with a great wife, and kids nearing college age.  The next day your company's been sold, you're demoted, and your new boss is half your age.  Then if that's not bad enough, your wife tells you she's pregnant, and your boss starts dating your daughter.  Youch...

I've always found Dennis Quaid performances enjoyable, but I had yet to see Topher Grace in a substantial role beyond his well-known TV role as Foreman on That 70's Show.  But the well publicized trailers I'd seen featured an exchange between Quaid and Grace that was compelling enough to get my attention.  As it turns out, the film lived up to the promise of the trailer.

The strong performances were enhanced tremendously by a great script and excellent direction.  There were several short scenes with no dialog at all that relied solely on camera work to tell the story.  That's one of the reasons I so enjoy film as a medium for telling a story.

The only negative I can speak to is that as the crowd filed out of the theater, some complained about the ending.  I was fine with it though.  For me the ending fit very well.

A good flick all around.

Rotten Tomatoes: 83%

P.S. -- I don't get all this Scarlett Johansson hype.  She was OK as the daughter dating her dad's boss, but I didn't come away with any strong feelings one way or the other about her or her character.  Evidently I'm the only one that feels that way though.
