First Real Snow of the Year

This morning we awoke to our first significant snow of the season.  We've had some minor flurries occasionally, but this is the first time anything has stuck around for awhile.

This picture (taken out my office window) doesn't do justice to how pretty it was this morning with the trees covered by fresh powder.  I didn't take this picture until this afternoon, and it's been above freezing most of the day..

Oh, by the way... As is always the case, the new snow was accompanied by the usual idiots on the roads.

Lastly, before I start hearing from my friends in Montana, Colorado, or Alaska... I know this snow is nothing compared to the amount you guys get.  Good for you.  If I wanted to live somewhere where snow is a possibility 9 months out of the year, I know where to go.  Until then, Spokane suits me just fine, thank you.

The idiots on the road that accompany the snow reminded me of an experience that I had when I was about 14. 1968

My family and I were driving from the S.F. bay area to Reno at Christmas time. It was snowing over the pass. We were all required to stop and put on tire chains. It was pretty slick. As I was helping my dad do ours he pointed to the car in front of us and said watch this. They had just finished putting the chains on their Toronado ( http://www.musclecarclub.com/musclecars/oldsmobile-toronado/oldsmobile-toronado-history.shtml ). Like us they had put their chains on the rear wheels of their car. They got in the car and attempted to drive away. Their front wheels just spun and they barely moved. My dad had taught me an valuable lesson. Sometimes doing what everyone else is doing isn't necessarily the right thing for your situation. You need to understand why you do things and see if that applies to you.
