Green Bay cut Tim Couch today. Another failed experiment.
I used to pull for Couch in Cleveland. Although he never really dazzled me with his performances there, he seemed like a cool guy with a good head on his shoulders that was saddled with a weak supporting cast. He took a great deal of punishment in Cleveland and he seemed to be a gamer to me -- at least until I heard him whining after a home game where the fans booed him off the field.
When I heard the Pack was interested in him, I was cautiously optimistic that he may just blossom in a new environment. And then I saw him play in the preseason... He always seemed confused and unsure of himself, and to make matters worse, he just never seemed to be giving much effort. OK, perhaps it's just that he's trying to learn a new offense. But after seeing him get plenty of time in the Tennessee game this weekend, I lost all hope. Evidently Mike Sherman did too.
After other failed 'experiments' in 2002 (Terry Glenn) and 2003 (Akili Smith), is this indicative of a possible trend on the part of the Sherman regime? Do they favor overrated, over hyped, big-name guys? With guys like Ryan Leaf, Cade McNown, and Lawrence Phillips out there, hopefully not.
Does anyone know where Jeff George is these days?
Come to think of it, of the 5 QBs taken in the first round of the infamous 1999 NFL Draft, 3 have been busts -- Cade McNown, Akili Smith, and now Couch (Donovan McNabb and Duante Culpepper are long-time starters) -- and Green Bay has run two of the three through the organization.
Maybe the better question is, what is Cade McNown doing these days?
